Islamic Guidance on Stem Cell & Targeted Cell Therapy
Stem Cell & Targeted Cell Therapy for Muslim Patients
At Stem Cells Center Malaysia, we honour the faith and values of our Muslim brothers and sisters. We understand the importance of ensuring that every step of your healing journey aligns with the teachings of Islam. That’s why we are committed to offering ethical and permissible stem cell therapies that respect the sanctity of life, human dignity and clear guidance.
What Does Islam Say About Medical Advancement?
Islam encourages the pursuit of knowledge and the use of permissible means to preserve health and life. The Qur’an and Hadith emphasise that seeking treatment is not only allowed—but recommended when done within the boundaries of Islamic ethics.
📖 “Do not throw [yourselves] with your [own] hands into destruction…”
— Surah Al-Baqarah: 195
📖 “There is no disease that Allah has created, except that He also has created its treatment.”
— Sahih Bukhari 5678
Our therapies are designed with this principle in mind—to promote healing without compromising Islamic values.
When Is Stem Cell Therapy Permissible in Islam?
According to Islamic scholars and interpretations of Qur’anic guidance, stem cell therapy is generally permissible (halal) under certain conditions:
-
The cells must not come from aborted foetuses or involve the destruction of life.
-
They must be harvested with full consent and without harm to the donor.
-
The treatment must be aimed at saving or restoring life or health, in line with the Islamic concept of darurah (necessity).
-
Sources like umbilical cord, placenta, adult bone marrow, or fat are widely accepted because they do not involve harm, death, or forbidden materials.
📖 “And whoever saves one life—it is as if he had saved all of mankind.”
— Surah Al-Ma’idah: 32
What Is Not Permissible (Haram)?
Islamic teachings are clear about the boundaries that must not be crossed:
Source of Cells | Islamic View | Reason |
---|---|---|
Aborted Embryos (after ensoulment) | ❌ Forbidden | Considered life with a soul after 120 days |
Embryonic Cells from IVF destruction | ❌ Forbidden | Involves destruction of potential life |
Pig-Derived Components | ❌ Forbidden | Clearly haram in Islam |
Cells without donor consent | ❌ Forbidden | Violates rights and human dignity |
What do we use?
Our stem cell and targeted cell therapies are sourced ethically from:
-
Umbilical cord tissue (post-birth donation, no harm)
-
Placenta (after natural delivery)
-
Bone marrow (from adult donors with full consent)
-
Adipose (fat) tissue (from the patient or approved donors)
These sources align with the Islamic values of mercy, protection of life, and ethical stewardship.
Respecting Your Beliefs With Compassion
We welcome questions from patients, scholars, or family members about:
-
The origin of the cells used
-
The ethical processes we follow
-
The intention (niyyah) behind each treatment: to restore health and serve humanity
📖 “He has not placed upon you in the religion any difficulty…”
— Surah Al-Hajj: 78
In matters of life and death, or chronic illness, the Qur’an recognises necessity (darurah) as a valid reason for taking measures that protect health—even in situations that would otherwise be restricted.
A Healing Journey for the Ummah
